Gwen Jorgensen is one of the United State's budding talents in distance events. Recently she retired from a remarkable career as a triathlete and is now pursuing an Olypmic gold medal in the marathon.
While this video is centered around her favorite running shoe, there are some takeaways for high school athletes.
1:50 -- She mentions that she rotates between 2-5 pairs of shoes at any given time. No, we do not expect any athletes to cycle through five pairs of shoes. However, some research exists that supports the idea of training in multiple pairs as each shoe works different tendons, muscles, and bones.
2:41 -- We all know that when we get something new, we want to show it off! At this point in the video, Jorgensen makes a vitally important point: only wear your running shoes if you are running. Wearing them for everyday activities shortens their lifespan by adding miles to them and by wearing down their tread. Does a football player wear cleats to class?
If you have questions about appropriate shoes, places to get shoes, or anything else, do not hesitate to ask a coach. We aren't experts, but we do have experience. We'll do our best to point you in the right direction!
